About Doc Knox

I am a writer, director, artist, educator, and actor originally from San Diego, California. I started drawing when I was two years old, copying the illustrations in my Sesame Street Dictionary. At eight years old, became the youngest member of the Southern California Cartoonist Society. In high school, I discovered theatre, and have since devoted my life to the pursuit of creativity.

While at Loyola Marymount University, I was heavily involved in both the mainstage and student theatres; I then completed my MA in Theatre Education at Emerson College, and my PhD in Drama at Tufts University, where my research focused on the history, practice, and theories of comedy. While at Tufts, I earned several accolades for my teaching and research, including the prestigious Kalman A. Burnim Prize for Scholarly Excellence in Drama.

After completing my PhD, I returned to San Diego, where I became involved with a number of arts organizations, including joining the steering committee of Rising Arts Leaders and founding a small theatre company (the ambitious, if short-lived, Ocean Beach Ensemble Experiment). From 2015 - 2021, I served as Marketing Director and Artistic Associate at New Village Arts, an award-winning professional theatre in Carlsbad, CA. I have also served as the Artistic Director for Carlsbad Playreaders, where I have produced, performed in, or directed over 20 different plays and musicals; in 2019, the Playreaders saw their most diverse selection of plays, playwrights, directors, and actors in the company’s 20+ year history. I have also continued teaching film and theatre throughout San Diego, while maintaining my love of illustration and art. I have three upcoming children’s books in development.

I currently serve as Copy Supervisor at Raindrop Branding + Advertising, where I get to create funny, unique videos alongside an endlessly creative team. Our work has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for clients, and have won dozens of advertising awards across multiple categories.

Directing credits include The 39 Steps, Singin’ in the Rain, Murder for Two, The Toxic Avenger: The Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, The Servant of Two Masters, Avenue Q, and Romeo and Juliet (New Village Arts); One Slight Hitch, Fuddy Meers, The Mousetrap, Betrayal (Carlsbad Playreaders); Lysistrata & The Birds (MiraCosta College); Psycho Beach Party (Ocean Beach Ensemble Experiment); The Alchemist, Mr. Marmalade (Tufts University); Endgame (Emerson College); Picasso at the Lapin Agile, The Laramie Project (Loyola Marymount University).
